DESIGN EXAMPLE :





Mill throughput : 60 tonnes/hr


Nut to FFB ratio : 12% (wet basis)

Air to cracked mixture ratio : 2.5 : 1 (by weight)

Air density : 1.18 kg/m3

Conveyor velocity : 16 m/s

Separation velocity : 11 m/s

System pressure : 180 mm W.G.

Efficiency of fan : 85%
 
Fan Capacity


Based on the data above, the calculation of fan capacity is as below,

Therefore,

Quantity of cracked mixture produced from ripple mill per hour,

= quantity of nut fed into ripple mill per hour = (mill throughput) X (nut to FFB ratio)

= (60 X 1000) X 0.12

= 7 200 kg/hr

Weight of air,

= (quantity of cracked mixture produced) X (air to cracked mixture ratio)

= 7200 / 2.5

= 18 000 kg/hr

Volume of air required = (weight of air) / (air density)


= 18000 / 1.18

= 15254.24 m3/kg

As 1.25 services factor required for extra air losses and leakage be appeared between the ducting and connection.

Hence,

Fan capacity = (volume of air required) X (service factor)

= 15254.24 X 1.25

= 19067.80 m3/hr

= 19068 m3/hr


Ducting Sizing


Below is a calculation to determine ducting diameter.

Therefore,

Pipe cross sectional area, A = (air volume required) / (conveyor velocity)

= 19068 X (16 X 60 X 60)

= 0.33 m2

Thus,

Diameter of pipe, D = √ (4A/π)

= √ (4 X 0.33 / π)

= 0.65 m
